The Sensex today climbed more than 400 points on Tuesday, October 13, as investors returned to Indian technology stocks following better-than-expected earnings from HCL Technologies, helping domestic equities outperform weaker Asian markets.
The BSE Sensex traded at 72,362.82, up 438.14 points or 0.61%, after touching an intraday high of 72,620.91. The Nifty 50 also recovered above 22,500, supported by gains in HCLTech, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tech Mahindra and Infosys. The rebound follows Monday’s Sensex close of 71,924.68 and comes despite fresh economic data showing that India’s inflation is approaching the upper end of the Reserve Bank of India’s tolerance range.
For investors tracking the Indian stock market today, the important development is the return of buying interest in IT shares after months of underperformance. Whether that buying spreads to other sectors will determine if Tuesday’s advance becomes a more durable market recovery.
Sensex Today: HCLTech and TCS Shares Lead Stock Market Gains
Technology stocks were the biggest contributors to Tuesday’s advance, with the Nifty IT index climbing more than 3% in early trading. HCLTech shares gained approximately 5.5%, while TCS rose nearly 5%. Tech Mahindra advanced more than 3%, and Infosys also traded higher.
HCLTech’s September-quarter earnings provided the immediate catalyst. The company reported stronger profitability in its IT and business services division, supported by improved operating margins and major contract wins.
Revenue increased approximately 2% sequentially to $3.72 billion, while new deal bookings reached $3.26 billion, reflecting continued demand for technology transformation services. The results encouraged investors to reassess the sector after a difficult year marked by concerns about slowing enterprise spending and the disruptive impact of artificial intelligence.
The Nifty IT index has lost approximately 23% since the beginning of 2026, leaving several large technology companies trading well below their earlier valuations. The latest earnings suggest that business conditions may be stabilising, although the pace of a sustained recovery remains uncertain.
Why Is the Indian Stock Market Rising Despite Higher Inflation?
Tuesday’s stock market rally comes against a challenging inflation backdrop. India’s September Consumer Price Index increased 5.54% year-on-year, compared with 4.82% in August. Food inflation accelerated to 7.74%, reflecting mounting pressure on household spending.
The increase brings headline inflation closer to the RBI’s 6% upper tolerance limit and strengthens expectations that policymakers may need to raise interest rates again. Higher borrowing costs can weigh on corporate investment, consumer spending and equity valuations, particularly in interest-sensitive sectors.
Nevertheless, investors have focused on company-specific earnings improvements rather than the inflation report alone. The rupee’s recovery has also provided some relief. The Indian currency strengthened toward 95.17 against the US dollar at Tuesday’s opening, extending gains after the RBI introduced measures to curb dollar demand and reduce foreign exchange volatility.
A more stable rupee could help restore investor confidence, although persistent foreign capital outflows remain a concern.
Nifty 50 Today: IT Stocks Outperform as Asian Markets Fall
The Nifty 50 advanced toward 22,550 during morning trading, with technology shares providing much of the momentum. Hindustan Unilever also gained, while Maruti Suzuki, NTPC and Max Healthcare were among the weaker performers.
The rally contrasted with losses across several Asian markets. South Korea’s KOSPI fell sharply amid concerns about Chinese advances in semiconductor technology, while elevated crude oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty continued to weigh on regional sentiment.
Indian equities have found support from domestic buying interest, but the recovery remains uneven. Small-cap shares lagged the benchmark indices, suggesting investors are favouring established companies rather than embracing a broad-based rally.
Sensex Prediction for Tomorrow: Will the Stock Market Rally Continue?
The near-term Sensex outlook depends on whether IT stocks can sustain their earnings-driven gains and attract broader buying across banking, financial services and consumer sectors.
A sustained move above 72,620 would strengthen the recovery and bring 73,000 into focus. However, inflation concerns, elevated oil prices and expectations of further RBI tightening could encourage selling as the index approaches resistance.
For now, Tuesday’s rally offers an early indication of improving sentiment rather than confirmation that the Indian stock market’s recent downtrend has ended.
The Nifty 50 outlook remains cautiously positive while technology stocks sustain their recovery. Investors will monitor corporate earnings, inflation expectations, crude oil prices and global market developments.
The Sensex is rising primarily because of strong gains in HCLTech, TCS and other technology stocks following encouraging quarterly earnings. The rupee’s recovery has also helped sentiment.
The Sensex could test 73,000 if buying momentum continues above the immediate resistance near 72,620. However, the index still faces technical resistance around its 20-day moving average at 73,240.
