The yen is fighting back. A strong dollar usually lifts this pair. Not this time. Each time USD/JPY nears 159, Tokyo starts to talk. Finance Minister Katayama says Japan is ready to act on wild yen moves. That keeps the pair in a tight box. The chart below shows where the fight is. If you trade the yen, this matters to you. Let’s read it together.

What the Chart Shows

The USD/JPY was trading at 157.37 when the BOJ met on 30 October. After that meeting, USD/JPY advanced to 158.77 by 3 November, which is slightly above the upper boundary of the range (158.57). However, buyers were unable to keep the USD/JPY above the upper boundary. Consequently, USD/JPY dropped to 157.41 on 4 November. At present, the USD/JPY is trading around 157.63. The pink area represents the range of 156.32-158.57. As long as the USD/JPY remains within the range, we can conclude that this is the main theme of the chart. In addition, sellers appear to emerge near the upper boundary of the range, while buyers seem to appear near the lower boundary of the range. Each dot indicates a close, high, or low. The dashed line at 160.00 indicates a level where Japan intervened in the past. Therefore, very few traders will be willing to drive prices into this region. Our USD/JPY analysis after the BoJ meeting first marked this box.

Why the Yen Is Holding

The BoJ kept its rate at 1.25%. The vote was 8 to 1. One member wanted 1.50% now. Governor Ueda said a hike could come at any meeting, even December, says Reuters. A hike lifts Japanese yields. That makes the yen more attractive. Traders now expect a December move. The dollar is also softer after the US midterm vote. Our Dow Jones forecast looks at the market after the Fed decision.

Levels to Watch

Think of 158.57 as a door. If it opens, the road to 160 is short. If it stays shut, expect another dip. Keep that firmly in mind. Above 158.57, the next stops are 159.60 and 160.00. Below 156.32, the next stop is 154.66. The BoJ also raised its inflation forecast for fiscal 2027, and CNBC covered it. Higher inflation means more rate hikes. That helps the yen. Other safe havens act in their own way, as our USD/CHF article shows.

Three Scenarios

  1. Bullish: a close above 158.57 targets 159.60, then 160.00.
  2. Bearish: a close below 156.32 targets 154.66.
  3. Neutral: the 156.32 to 158.57 box holds.

A simple strategy would be to sell around 158.50 with a stop loss placed at 159.60 or buy around 156.50 with a stop loss below 156.00. The risks for each trade are clearly defined. It is important to wait until the end of the day to determine if your trading signal was confirmed, rather than acting on a temporary spike in price.

Short-term, we are likely to see a choppy market and large swings based upon any yen news. Long-term, the key date is the next BoJ meeting in December. If they hike rates, then this will likely lead to a drop in the USD/JPY rate. However, if they keep rates unchanged, then this will probably lead to the USD/JPY rate rising back towards 160. Be careful about how much capital you commit to trading near 160 as well as setting a protective stop order prior to entering the market. A sudden, sharp decline in the value of the yen can quickly erode all profits made in a short period of time. Our smart forex setups guide can help you plan. Would you buy a dip to 156.32, or wait for the break?
